Devotional Writing
with Kat Mills
Here are some guidelines for your month-long writing practice:
I encourage you to write by hand, if possible. In a world of faster and more, let’s move slower and simpler. Writing by hand is a lost art form, and engaging with it will not only shift what you write, but how you connect to it.
Set a timer for 10 minutes and write the entire time. If you only have 5 minutes, do 5. The practice is simply to engage with the work within the given time. You don’t have to like what you wrote or read it ever again (unless you want to, of course!).
No editing. Allow yourself to be in the practice of writing. Be bold, be messy, be bad, be spontaneous. Creating and editing are different processes, so save the editing for later.
Write steadily, without stopping—this doesn’t mean you have to write quickly. The prompts are there to help you. If you feel stuck (and you will), write the prompt over and over, adding just a word or two. Wait until something shifts. If you’re patient, it always does.
There will be gentle invitations to share your work. Ask a trusted friend to receive it without giving any feedback—just listening. This is a powerful part of the practice.
Writing as a devotional practice means that we are bowing to the mystery of creation and accepting that something unknown will emerge.
A simple act, such as lighting a candle or incense, calling in your artistic ancestors, or setting up a small altar next to your writing space, might feel supportive.

Week 01: The Vessel
“Perfectionism is the voice of the oppressor, the enemy of the people.
It will keep you cramped and insane your whole life,
and it is the main obstacle between you and a shitty first draft.
I think perfectionism is based on the obsessive belief that if you run carefully enough,
hitting each stepping-stone just right,
you won't have to die.
The truth is that you will die anyway
and that a lot of people who aren't even looking at their feet
are going to do a whole lot better than you,
and have a lot more fun while they're doing it.”
― Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Week 02: Desire
“What you encounter, recognize or discover depends to a large degree on the quality of your approach. Many of the ancient cultures practiced careful rituals of approach.
An encounter of depth and spirit was preceded by careful preparation.
When we approach with reverence, great things decide to approach us. Our real life comes to the surface and its light awakens the concealed beauty in things.
When we walk on the earth with reverence, beauty will decide to trust us. The rushed heart and arrogant mind lack the gentleness and patience to enter that embrace.”

Week 03: Compost/Release
The fragment of a dead volcano in my pocket
I walk to the end of endless frost.
Yesterday, a hand in my hand
but today only the struggle
of a tongue at the end of my fingertips
talking to stone.
In the distance, smoke rises and settles.
Ember under ash
a volcano speaking in the mouth
a molten current of words
a brilliant hell—
that is poetry
scratching, immortalizing
the winter of exile.

Week 04: Devotion
Mother of God
similar to fire,
ignite my heart in prayer.
Where once I stood on familiar ground,
selecting my spiritual experiences
like choice morsels from a well-tended larder,
now my garden has gone up in flames
and I thirst only for the Living God.
Let me find him, Mother,
as you do,
deep inside my own ripened being.
Let me swallow the Sacred
and burn with that Presence,
illuminating a way home to the Truth.
Lit from within,
let my blazing heart become a sanctuary
for the weary traveller,
until this long night lifts
and dawn unfolds her new radiance.
